Women on Water (WoW) was founded to provide a unique opportunity for women in the club to get acquainted with each other and to enjoy sailing in a relaxed and encouraging environment.
WoW meets several times a year, providing participants a relaxed space to learn about yachting. There is no need to feel self-conscious about learning in front of a spouse or partner, or somebody more skilled. Although each meeting has a focus they are appropriate for all skill levels, from beginner to advanced. The only exception are the race clinics when we require participants to have mastered basic sailing skills.
Each session is four to five hours long and is run by women. We meet inside the clubhouse for a pre-talk and then head off to a boat. Presenters at the WoW events are sailing instructors, licensed captains, and women with decades of boating experience. We cover a range of topics such as making your way around the boat, sailing basics, safety and readiness, racing and our favorite, going to Catalina. Sessions always end with a debrief, lots of conversation, and a meal at the club.
Our goals are for women to enjoy the boat weather power or sail, to take pleasure in the natural marine world, and to relax while learning new skills. It is important for everyone to feel safe while gaining independence on the water. Gaining knowledge and confidence to assist or run a boat is one of the great pleasures of sailing, knowing what everyone is doing and know how you can participate. And most importantly, WoW is here so female club members can meet other women and share yachting experiences in a supportive setting.
