In the doublehanded fleet (Club 420s), Jack Jorgensen and Samantha Gebb survived a sixth place finish in the first race of the day to win the Bemis Trophy. They rebounded by winning the final two races for the five point win. They won four of the nine races conducted this week. Kate Rakelly and Colleen Hackett of the Mission Bay Yacht Club nipped Alex Curtiss (Chicago Yacht Club) and Katie Hall (Lake Forest Sailing Club) for second place by tiebreaker. Jorgensen had a one point lead over Rakelly and a two point lead over Curtiss heading into the final race. The race committee decided to move the windward mark significantly left for the second rounding in the final race, which made for a close finish. Jorgensen won despite a rough second row start. Curtiss finished just one place ahead of Rakelly, which put them in a tie for second. However, Rakelly won the tie-breaker for sole possession of second. James Schaefer and Jason Raymond of the Cedar Point Yacht Club received the Bemis Sportsmanship Award for the doublehanded fleet.

I found this post on the Pac Cup website for today: The last several days have been difficult for the Pacific Cup fleet. The good news is that all are safe and sailing. Here’s the bad news: Friday, July 9 – Tiki Blue retiring due to electrical system failure. Now safely back in San Francisco. July 10 – Plus Sixteen and Sea Reign retire, schedule issues. Both home now. July 11 – Bequia has steering failure, returning home with emergency tiller (eventually fixed steering, now back home). July 11 – Rapid Transit has a broken rudder, is retiring and returning (currently approaching Santa Barbara, rudder repaired.) July 12 – Recidivist breaks headstay, have let spare halyards forward to secure mast and are continuing to Hawaii under reduced sail. July 13 – Deception taking on water, approx 20 gallons per minute (they have since found and plugged a leak at the rudder bearing, are continuing the race). July 13 – Rhum Boogie has backstay problem, are rigging extra padeyes to help secure backstay (this is now under control, are continuing under reduced sail). July 13 – Trial Run has a crack in the boom near the gooseneck. Continuing. July 13 – California Condor breaks rudder (she has twin rudders). Later, the second rudder breaks. She is continuing to Hawaii using drogue steering. That’s a lot of carnage in a few days! All boats are either heading to a mainland port, or to Hawaii, and some of these are still actively racing. No outside assistance has been needed, or requested.

GREAT JOB GREAT SCOT Darren and Al on Great Scot wound up in Second Place in the double handed division of the Newport-Bermuda Race! Great job guys! First place wasanother J-35, Paladin. Al and Darren Garnier will likely finish the Newport-Bermuda Race this evening. They are currently (Weds AM) leading their very competitive Double-Handed class boat for boat. Their J-35 Great Scot was originally in LAYC as Nick Martin's heavily campaigned boat. Then Tom Garnier and now Darren in the Boston area. There is great tracking, a finish line webcam, and results, etc on http://www.bermudarace.com/ This morning Al reported from the boat: ""Strength is up, spirit is up. As Tom would say, we are accelerating to the finish! We destroyed our No. 1 jib by leaving it on deck. $5000. This caused us to use the jib top which hasn't been used maybe since Nick had the boat. This is our secret weapon!" Jim Morgan was sailing on Hound, took 5th place in their division.

Just thinking on a Mothers Day and Fathers Day Series - Saturday a simple race around Point Fermin or such, then Sunday Brunch awards, or dock party?

Tell LAYC Racing PRO what you think, Ideas, lets discuss what you like and do not like about the racing,
  • Should we have more whitney races?
  • Should the layover at Howlands become its own series scored away from Whitney Times Bogart Series?
  • Should we add more day races? just to point fermin or around an oil island?
  • Should we have more fun races? Should we have more race then dinner events?
  • Should we repeat the popular Arounda Catalina race and send the boats around catalina again?
  • Should we organize a to California YC and Return for the Whitneys?  Or make a race to another club series?
  • Would a race to Point Dume around Catalina then to Dana Point and Return be of interest as a long race?
  • Got another course to suggest?
  • Should the Whitneys hold more races before the PV or Cabo race?
  • Should the Whitneys wait and hold more races during the Summer when the wind is more steady?
  • All this and more Sock it too us let us know what races you are looking for in the Los Angeles Harbor!
