The Los Angeles Sailing Foundation is the charitable organization based in San Pedro, California. Our foundation has been established to support the sport of sailing and to promote the stewardship of the marine environment. We reach out to underprivileged youth and to those who would not normally have access to sailing and marine experience by offering sailing scholarships, education, and by supporting relevant programs and organizations.

Our Program

We believe that our program instills solid American values of teamwork, leadership, and self reliance. It is our goal to educate children from the surrounding community who do not regularly have access to the ocean or its marine life. We host educational seminars each year that discuss issues such as marine wildlife conservation and keeping our waters clean for use of future generations. Current topics include: sailing instruction, marine conservation principles, rigging, navigation, energy conservation, racing techniques, and general seamanship. We also include environmental issues such as recycling, reducing trash output at home, and river outflow cleanup. The educational seminars last from half a day to a full day and are taught by our directors and officers, as well as hired speakers and instructors. We also sponsor trips to Catalina and participate in Catalina Conservancy events such as beach clean-ups, and related activities in the harbor at Cabrillo Beach.

Our Future

By encouraging these children to participate in waterfront activities, we promote their enjoyment and understanding of the marine environment. Our program is offered to approximately fifty youth on a yearly basis. In future, we will be expanding our program as resources allow.  This year we are adding swimming scholarships to encourage kids to take the first step into sailing.

Your gifts will make it possible for an underprivileged youth in the Los Angeles, Wilmington, San Pedro, or Long Beach community to participate in the Los Angeles Yacht Club Sailing program in the summer of 2010.
